Where to Find Tour Spot 4: After getting off the elevator, veer right. If you took the stairs, follow the blue carpet to where the desk is to your right.
The big desk immediately as you exit the elevators is the combined Reference Desk and Language and Writing Tutoring check-in desk.
The portion of the desk closest to the elevators is the Reference Desk. This desk is staffed by librarians whenever the building is open. Librarians are research experts and you can ask them for help with any part of research, such as finding a book or article, using library databases, or citing your sources. They are also great guides to help you navigate college and all the resources available to you at Santa Fe College - if you need help, just ask!
The Reference Desk also has the following equipment to borrow:
All items are borrowed with your SF ID card or an official government-issued photo ID.
The portion of the desk furthest from the elevators is the Languages and Writing Tutoring check-in. The second floor provides tutoring in writing, American Sign Language, English for Academic Purposes, Chinese, French, reading, and Spanish. Unlike the first floor, you will sign in on the computer and then wait to be assigned a tutor. Tutors are also online and subject availability differs, so check the tutoring Hours page.
Near the public stairwell, you will see one portion of the artwork on display in the library. There is a tradition at Santa Fe College of collecting and displaying artwork from Florida artists, many of which are also local artists in the Gainesville area. Some of Santa Fe College's most beautiful works of art have found a home in the Lawrence W. Tyree Library. Look around as you explore the building and see what other art you can find!
In the south corner, next to the art wall, is a glassed in room. This is multipurpose room Y-240. This room is often reserved for Learning Commons workshops, class visits, and other academic purposes. Students may use it for general study if there is nothing scheduled.
The large open area along the south wall is the Languages and Writing tutoring area. Tutors are available in person 6 days a week, but check the tutoring hours for specific subject availability. Once you have checked in at the desk by the elevators, wait to be assigned a tutor. Tutors are also available online via Zoom.
Now continue right, past the study tables and find large study room Y-233 in the corner. This is one of the two largest study rooms for student use, for a minimum of four users and up to 16. This room may be reserved ahead of time for up to three hours. When arriving for a reservation, students should check in at the second floor Reference Desk.
This study room has a large table, chairs, whiteboards, and a TV with attached computer and webcam.
Now head to Spot 5: Head north a bit from Y-233 and stop by the shelves.
