World Language Films

The following films are primarily in Spanish. All films are listed with the English title first. Use the call numbers to locate the films in the Media Collection (2nd floor). You may check out Media Collection items for four weeks.

Mango Languages has six full-length movies you can watch within the database with simultaneous Latin American Spanish and English subtitles. Click the Explore option and then Mango Premiere to access them. Requires Flash.

• Alamar: Before their inevitable farewell, Jorge, a young man of Mayan roots, and Natan, his half-Italian son, spend time together living off the Banco Chinchorro coral reef.
• The Colors of the Mountain = Los Colores de la Montaña: A boy who yearns to become a goalkeeper accidentally kicks his ball into a minefield and goes to rescue it.
• Gigante: Jara is a shy and lonely 35-year-old security guard at a supermarket on the outskirts of Montevideo. He works the night shift, monitoring the surveillance cameras of the entire building. One night Jara discovers Julia, a 25-year-old cleaning woman, through one of the cameras and is immediately attracted to her. Night after night, he watches her on the cameras while she works. Soon he starts following her after work: to the cinema, the beach and even to a date with another man. Jara's life becomes a series of routines and rituals around Julia, but eventually he finds himself at a crossroad and must decide whether to give up his obsession or confront it.
• Lake Tahoe: A story of a teenager and the strange events that take place in his small town.
• Viva Cuba: In a tale akin to Romeo and Juliet, the friendship between two children is threatened by their parents' differences.
• The Window: It is a significant day for 80 year-old Antonio. After an absence of many years, his estranged son is coming to visit. All must be perfect. There will be a toast with a very special champagne; an embrace; warm words that may finally bridge the gap between them. But before, Antonio must wait. Bedridden, he looks out his window at the Patagonian landscape and sees light and life, the past and the present, while sensing the future. He decides to secretly leave the house, unseen by his faithful caretakers, to take what might be a last walk in his fields, breathing the air, treading the earth, inhaling the scent of the land that had been his life.
