Recorded at a time when Dizzy was fronting his fabled postwar big band, featuring jazz greats such as pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, and bassist Ray Brown, this concert film captures the irrepressible trumpeter at his finest. In a format that was typical of the day, dancing acts and singers such as Helen Humes or Kenny "Pancho" Hagood were featured alongside the headlining Gillespie Orchestra—while Dizzy and his men enthusiastically attacking bebop classics such as "Salt Peanuts," "Shaw 'Nuff," and "Things to Come" remains thrilling to watch. All clips have been selected from the 1947 feature Jivin' in Be-Bop.

This video compiles various short- and medium-length films starring the great Duke Ellington and his orchestra, including Black and Tan from 1929; Symphony in Black from 1935—featuring the famous sequence with Billie Holiday; and three scenes starring Mae West in Belle of the Nineties from 1934, among many other musical sequences from major motion pictures.

James "Blood" Ulmer is one of the few guitarists to have forged a style based largely on the traditions of African-American vernacular music. Ulmer is an adherent of saxophonist/composer Ornette Coleman's vaguely defined Harmelodic theory and plays with a stuttering, vocalic attack; his jagged lines speak with the authority of a free jazz improviser and the accent of a soul-jazz tenor saxophonist. His solo guitar work is an expressive, hard-edged, loudly amplified hybrid. But Ulmer isn't limited in his musical scope. In these sessions for "Solos: The Jazz Sessions," he reveals himself to be an instant inventor of repute on the flute and a memorable songwriter and blues singer with the now classic "Are you Glad to be in America?

In 2007 the legendary American duo White Stripes toured Canada. Besides playing the usual venues they challenged themselves and played in buses and cafes and for Indian tribal elders. Music video director Emmett Malloy followed the band and managed to capture both the special tour, extraordinary concert versions of the band's minimalist, raw, blues-inspired rock songs, and the special relationship between the extroverted Jack White and the introspective Meg White.
