Firebird [on Stravinsky and the Ballets Russes: The Firebird/Le Sacre du Printemps]
Call Number: MEDIA GV1790.A1 S77 2009Based on Russian folklore, tells the story of Prince Ivan who wanders into an enchanted garden and sees a beautiful bird who is trying to pluck golden fruit from a silver tree. Ivan captures the bird, but succumbs to its entreaties to be set free. In gratitude for its freedom The Firebird gives Ivan a magic feather. Filmed at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.

Swan Lake

This the Prince promises her, but he is tricked by a wicked magician who disguises his daughter as the swan-maiden. Siegfried and his love leap to their deaths thus destroying the evil power of the magician.

The Winter's Tale
Call Number: MEDIA GV1786.O68 W56 2015A ballet based on Shakespeare's tragicomedy that focuses on King Leontes, who accuses his boyhood friend of betrayal, condemns his wife for adultery, and banishes his newborn daughter. The story is taken up fifteen years later when the wronged and innocent parties are re-united with the king who has since come to his senses and now lives in a state of perpetual grief and regret. Recorded at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, April 2014.

Paul Taylor Dance Company in Paris
Call Number: MEDIA GV1785 .T39 P38 2013Paul Taylor, among the last living members of the second generation of America's modern dance artists, is widely considered to be one of the foremost American choreographers of the 20th century. This program recorded in 2012 at the Theatre National de Chaillot in Paris is composed of two ballets - Brandenburgs- opus 88 (1988), set to Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, and Beloved Renegade- opus 129 (2008) set to Poulenc's Gloria and inspired by the life and work of Walt Whitman.
